Sea Port: Cargo Boat Tycoon 1.0.234

Ho-ho-ho and a barrel of lost packets

Hey laddie! Put that barrel o' fish down and come, sit next to me. I've got some things to tell ya. Now listen here! Do you want to lade stinking fishes for the rest of yer life? Or are ye lookin' for som'n else? Because in Seaport, you could reach the highest heights that controlling a fishing village can offer ye.

Aye, if you thought that Seaport is one of those stinkin' rigid town builders that only move forward if you stick a bunch of diamond in their arse, then you're dead flat half wrong. I mean, you can surely spot that blasted gem resource with a little annoying plus sign next to it, but you know what? This is the first time when, not only that I'm not bothered by it, but I was somewhat thinking of actually buying some at one point. Yes! I, the ultimate hater of freemiums, considering of buying in-game currency. The madness! Luckily, the game's buggy network code and general stability convinced me to finally ditch it. But more on that later.

Seaport

Seaport has you managing and expanding a fishing village from the early days of colonialism up to modern times. The game's main attractions are the various ships that you'll get to use, then put in a museum as technology evolves. The graphics are beautiful to behold. While the buildings and scenery are well executed 2D drawings, the ships, barrels, crates, and everything else that floats is in 3D. Considering you'll be staring at the same village for most of the time, having graphics candy to look at is very welcome.

Gameplay-wise, Seaport revolves around producing and collecting resources from other insular locations. Your basic economy revolves around collecting fish which are used to power your wood, stone and iron production. These three are needed to construct buildings and ships. You will need these ships to procure gold and extra resources when needed. There's also a commodity market to which you'll have access once you have something to trade. As your buildings get upgraded, production times will also increase considerably, leaving you with nothing to do but hunt for barrels that pop-up near the pier. But I guess that's specific to this type of 'game.'

Seaport

As you accumulate experience, you'll be able to explore more locations. These locations of these are sources of gold and basic resources and will also upgrade to yeld higher returns, the more you trade with them. Trading is fairly abstracted. You can send your ships to gather gold, wood, fish and whatnot, but you won't be giving anything in return. Well, not exactly anything. Every voyage will require sailors, which are also an expendable resource, which makes them ship fuel. Unlike other resources, sailors are produced automatically from your town hall and village houses, but there's a limit to how much you can accumulate.

Here's where my enthusiasm for the game waned. For some reason, my sailor count kept rising as I wasn't spending them fast enough. But what struck me as odd was that they managed to surpass the town hall limit, which made building houses completely irrelevant. If this wasn't enough, I noticed show-stopping problems with the app itself. Seaport requires a constant network connection. When I eventually had to go offline at some point and then came back on a different network later that day, my progress was nowhere to be found. Even though I had Seaport connect to my Facebook account, there was no trace of my previous session. So I had to start all over again. Finally, what sealed the deal for me was that after switching networks again, Seaport finally started crashing on launch. These kinds of problems are wholly unacceptable in a game in which you are supposed to invest real money on a regular basis.

Final Thoughts

Seaport is arguably a more enjoyable game than other freemium town-builders, which are becoming (hopefully) a tired genre. I enjoyed the fish based economy and the sailing & trading part. However, the app is so unstable that I cannot recommend spending anything in-game, as you risk to lose everything due to the awful network issues.
